Veteran Palm User Very Disappointed |
The Tungsten E is my fourth Palm and I loved them all. I began with the orignal Palm Pilot. My Tungsten E is awful. The Palm OS is still the best, but something has happend with manufacturing quality control. The power button problem, heard about often in reviews, showed up within months. Mine no longer operates at all. I turn it on by using the other buttons and need to let it shut itself off using the time-out function. This, of course, makes poor battery life even worse.
The other major problem is that I can no longer even use graffiti because the sensitivity in the writing area of the screen is all but gone, despite the fact that I used protective screens on it. I now have to use the typewritter screen to enter data.
At this point I'm so upset with Palm that I can't see rewarding them by buying another as a replacement. |

Love It! |
I've been using the E since it first came out and I'm on my SECOND unit, but not because of any failure on the part of the Tungsten. I lost the first one :o(
I call this my "Swiss Army Palm" because it does EVERYTHING. I use it for a PIM, synching it to my computer's Outlook calendars, contacts, and alarms. I play games on it, I read E books (I'm never without reading material in a long line or a solo lunch), I listen to music (It's a great music player with the addition of PocketTunes Deluxe and some compact headphones). I use the calculator. It's my photo album for pictures of my kids. I carry my shopping lists (Handyshopper) on it. I use Documents and Sheets to Go to carry and use important documents with me. I have many knitting patterns converted to Documents to Go format so they are with me "on the road". Using Avant Go, I can download driving directions from MapQuest and don't have to worry about losing the paper with the directions on them. It's even my nightlight and flashlight.
I'm working on adding video capability with the addition of MMPlayer and a bigger memory card.
I love that I've eliminated all the paper junk in my purse (i.e. appointment slips, shopping lists, etc) thanks to it. I carry a very small purse with only room for my wallet, PDA, and cell phone--very efficient.
It is stable, both units I've owned worked without a glitch. Even losing my first unit was not terrible, because I merely had to sync my new unit to have everything back the way I like it. It goes without saying that it's important to sync regularly. The only bad part was paying for a new one.
The display is AWESOME and my over-40 eyes have no trouble seeing the screen. Even reading E books on the small screen does not strain my eyes (I have it set for a rather large font!)
The battery life DOES stink. One advantage of having owned two is that I have two chargers. One lives in my office and one at home, so when I'm playing games or listening to music in a fixed place I plug it in. Actually, I now have a retractible cable sync/charger that hooks into my computer in the office. I'm looking into getting a battery extender so I can use it on a long plane trip.
I love the slim design and think it looks very nice with it's included flip cover. Yes, the flip cover does cause some small scratches on the metallic (plastic) frame around the screen, but it's not so much that I'm bothered by that.
My E is in almost constant use--several hours a day--and I haven't had a single problem. Now that they are not making these anymore, I can only hope that the E2 will be as good if I ever have to replace this one. |
