No problems !! |
| I had no problems with my buy. The notepad has not given me any problems as of yet. I really agree with the guy who has mentioned about people using it the wrong way and blocking the air vents. Very much happy with my buy. |

had lockup problem... |
| Started locking up two hours after I took it out of the box, called repair center, they were aware of the static lockup problems. Repair took two weeks, seems to be fine now. Service center was top notch, CSS Laptop Service in Waltham, MA. I am very pleased with the performance and the LCD is bright, images are sharp. Still disapointed I had to have it repaired, for a $1k should have worked right out of the box. |

3 warranty repairs so far... |
I've owned this machine since December 2004 and have already had to return it twice for warranty work: once for a failed motherboard; once for the "static electricity" fix/replacement of the keyboard & speaker surround panel. I have just noticed that one of the two cooling fans has stopped working, so I'm preparing for return #3.
My work environment is dry, and I was regularly experiencing the lock-up problems described by others. I had noticed these freezes were associated with small static shocks when I touched the area surrounding the keyboard/speakers. I suspect this cumulative shocking led to the failure of the original motherboard, but the tech guy said there was no way to be certain. The static/freezing problem was completely solved by warranty repair #2. Anyone considering this machine MUST make sure that is performed.
Defects aside, I was also a little disappointed that there is no internal microphone (I didn't check - I assumed all laptops had them now), and the sound from the speakers is truly low quality.
On the plus side, the wide screen is great for viewing movies (...with headphones...) and working with apps that require lots of screen real estate. The 60 GB hard drive is nice (most competing laptops at the time of purchase seemed to have 40 GB). I have no complaints about overall system speed/performance.
But... in the past 10 years I've owned six laptop computers from several manufacturers (IBM, Compaq, Toshiba) and have never experienced so many problems/inconveniences with a single machine. I'm frankly worried about the approaching expiration of the one-year Toshiba warranty. |
